M-80 was created by ex-VENDETTA guitarist Niki Buzz (real name Darrell Young). Early try outs would be ex-WHITEHORSE, VIDEO NU-R, and AVALANCHE bassist Harry Clay and drummer Louis McCorkle. However, in 1980 the bass position duly went to Don Costa whilst Sam Mann took over from McCorkle on drums.

Costa was known as the man thrown out of OZZY OSBOURNE's band for being too outrageous. Before famously shredding his skin with a cheese grater onstage with Ozzy, Costa had trod the boards with a formative version of W.A.S.P., DAMIAN and the JACK RUSSELL fronted DANTE FOX, subsequently to evolve into GREAT WHITE. Costa's first attempts at forming a band would involve ex-ASSASSIN drummer Louis McCorkle. Clay and McCorkle subsequently worked together with NOIZEY WALKER.

M-80's demos made an impact not only for the high quality of the songs but also for an outro tape that involved ten minutes of audio from one of Don Costa's post-show female conquests. Costa's stay in M-80 was short-lived, but he would make a lasting impression on the Los Angeles club scene by donning mummy costumes and straight jackets onstage. In 1984 Buzz recorded with former BODINE bassist Jeronimo Bos and drummer Gerard Haitsma in Holland on a record tentatively titled 'Don't Feed The Animal'. He also put together the Dutch based NIKI BUZZ BAND with Arco Boomer on bass guitar and Robbie Fiffer on the drums, playing Dingwalls in London during October.

However, by 1985 and the recording of 'The Maniac's Revenge' album, Buzz recruited the British rhythm section of erstwhile SAMSON bassist Chris Aylmer and L.A. SECRETS drummer Ian Roberts. Subsequently, Buzz would create the heavy Rap project THE ALARM before touring and playing with CURTIS KNIGHT. Latter bands included MIDNIGHT GYPSIES and LONE WOLF.
