Be-low [Life Force Records]

From Germany (of all places) comes Mindfield, a band that takes the influence of the melodic Swedish death sound and mixes it with a genuine rock n' roll attitude. Imagine modern Sentenced mixed with old Sentenced. Imagine if Motley Crue had somehow been influenced by At the Gates and In Flames. Or better yet, imagine if Dave Mustaine had grown up in Sweden in the late 90's. This is metal that hasn't forgotten it's rock roots. Mindfield take the catchy, creative riffs of modern metal and merge them with the genuine rock n' roll attitude of 80's metal sans the glam.

As I've mentioned, Mindfield has obviously taken some lessons from the Gothenburg sound, but you'll also notice a strong American influence as well. Basically, if you like catchy riffs, then you won't be disappointed by Be-low. Most of these songs are quick and energetic and, if not for the clean vocals, could pass for straight-forward melodic death metal songs. There are a few medium paced songs as well as a ballad or two to break things up, but even the slower songs keep it heavy and memorable. Well, there are some exceptions to this, I suppose. The fourth track "Mucher No Illores" is a forty second Spanish guitar-styled excursion that just seems completely out of place and pointless. It's too short to be fully developed or create an atmosphere. The same thing can be said about the piano ballad "A Silent Moment" which is just over a minute long. I guess it doesn't really matter since they are both so short that you can't really get annoyed by them, but I have to wonder why they even bothered putting them on the album in the first place.

Vocally, Danny Kabus reminds me of Dave Mustaine quite a bit. He has a similar strained and somewhat gruff vocal approach that really works with the music. His vocal melodies are just as memorable as the riffs. What surprises me is how low the vocals are in the mix. Not they are buried, just that I would have expected them to be really forward (read: really commercially accessible). Personally, I think they are mixed perfectly as they don't overshadow the music, but work with it the way vocals are supposed to. That always wins some major bonus points with me. Too often, bands let the vocals dominate the mix instead of treating them like another instrument.

So, despite being on a label best known for hardcore bands trying to be At the Gates clones, Mindfield is a really good metallic rock band that should be a lot bigger than they are. This album took me totally by surprise and I have to highly recommend it. // http://www.metalcoven.com/r

The thrash metal band Mindfield began in Germany in the year 1994. The band started when guitarist Rainer Sickler joined with four other musicians. However the band line-up altered frequently for the following two years, it was then, in 1996 that the band released its' first demo titled "Fields Of Vision". During that period, the band toured with other German bands such as Totenmond, Night In Gails, and Crosscut. In 1997 ExamMindfield released an EP titled "The Final Piece". Mindfield was signed to the record label Gutter Records in 1999. Later, in 2000, released their first full length album entitled "Deviant". The band later signed with Lifeforce Records, which happens to be the same label that claimed Trivium's early works. In 2003 Mindfield released "Below" with Lifeforce Records.
